President of the Clunes Cricket Club, Mark Allan, says 13-year-old bowler Brett Coon, who claimed their club’s first A Reserve hat-trick in 25 years, has a bright future.
Coon chalked up the feat during his side’s top-of-the-table clash with the Phelan Colts on Saturday.
The Colts needed 27 runs to win when the teenager entered the fray, ripping through the middle order and leading Clunes to an 8-run victory.
Mr Allan told Gold that the youngster was so “overcome with emotion” that he burst into tears.
“He was that happy,” he said.
“The first person to give him a big bear hug was his brother when he got the wicket, so he was pretty excited and proud [of] it.”
Mr Allan added that Coon has already represented Maryborough for the under 13s Country Week carnival squad.
“He trains basically every night,” he said.
He added that he’s “on the right pathway” to playing a lot more representative cricket.
