Bendigo could field a side in the state’s premier netball competition, The Victorian Netball League (VNL).

Netball Victoria has announced plans to expand its regional footprint earlier this week.

Currently, only one of the 10 teams in the VNL is based outside of Melbourne.

Two new licenses would be handed out for the 2024 season, taking the league to 12 teams.

Melbourne Vixens general manager of performance and pathways Megan Simpson said it’s also important to invest in underage athletes to ensure the strength and longevity of new teams.

“We think allowing new clubs to field an underage team initially is the ideal entry pathway as we look to build on the success of our competition and foster the game across metropolitan and regional Victoria,” she said.

“While our premier netball competition currently has a significant number of regional athletes involved, the opportunity for additional regional licences is exciting and will make the competition more accessible for talented regional athletes and coaches.”
