Accountant Steals $480,000 to Fuel Longstanding Gambling Problem

A local accountant “addicted to the rush of winning” stole almost $480,000 from a regional golf club using the money to gamble in “significant and increasing quantities.”

40-year-old Travis Garth Austerberry, faced the Bendigo County Court on Friday, where it was heard he took $479,695 from Belvoir Park Golf Club in Ravenswood.

Over 271 separate transactions, Austerberry used another worker’s login details to approve transactions to his own bank account.

Previously working as the Treasurer at Belvoir Park Golf Club in Ravenswood, Austerberry was arrested in April and faced Bendigo County Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to theft. He was sentenced to three years in prison with a non-parole period of two years.
