Victoria’s First Pet Census’ Findings

Victoria’s first Pet Census saw 37,000 pet parents share their unique insights and opinions on pet ownership, attitudes, and experiences.

The census was brought forward by the Animal Justice Party and Member for Northern Victoria, Georgie Purcell, says the census will provide governments with a greater understanding of pet welfare and owner priorities.

The survey identified an estimated 4.3 million pets across Victoria. The most popular type of pet was awarded to dogs, accounting for 41%, followed by cats at 24%.

Purcell, says the census identified a lack of pets, specifically dogs, who have been rescued from animal shelters.
