The Victorian Goldfields bid for a World Heritage listing has been given a boost.

The state government has committed half a million dollars to progress the long term economic, social and cultural vision for the listing.
Bendigo’s Mayor Andrea Metcalf said the international heritage recognition would not come easily.

“Today we stand together and thank the State Government for recognising and rewarding the incredible potential this initiative will mean not just for the region, but for Australia.”.
“We look forward to presenting the World Heritage case and a transformative regional investment master plan in the very near future,” Cr Metcalf said.
Chris Meddows-Taylor is the Chair of the Victorian Goldfields Tourism Executive and Mayor of the Central Goldfields shire council.

He said the plan is tied in with preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
“Everyone sees the opportunity to link the Commonwealth Games into this,” he said.

Cr Meddows-Taylor added that 13 local councils, tourism industry stakeholders and the private sector would be “working closely” with 2026 Games organisers.
The region proposed for the heritage listing represents close to half-a-million people covering almost 40,000 square kilometres.
